How much does it cost to hire a drone pilot?
Part 107 pilots charge $150–$400 per hour in 2026, but most jobs are quoted flat: $150–$400 for a residential real estate shoot, $150–$400 for a roof inspection, $500–$1,800 for a 20-acre map and $1,200–$2,500 for a commercial video day.
How much does a drone inspection cost?
A residential roof inspection costs $150–$400. Commercial roofs run $400–$1,200, thermal building inspections $250–$1,000, cell towers $350–$1,200 per tower and solar farms $150–$500 per MW.
How much does real estate drone photography cost?
A standard listing package of 10–15 edited aerials costs $150–$400. Adding a 4K video takes it to $250–$550, and luxury or commercial properties run $400–$1,200.
How much does drone mapping cost per acre?
Roughly $10–$30 per acre for a basic orthomosaic and $50–$150 per acre for engineering-grade topography with ground control, with a $400–$800 minimum for small sites.
Why do drone prices differ by city?
Labor and insurance costs, travel distances, airspace (Class B metros need LAANC authorizations or waivers) and how many pilots compete locally. Our market index runs from 0.84 in McAllen to 1.32 in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Do I need a Part 107 certified pilot?
Yes. Any drone flight that supports a business in the US requires an FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate. Ask for the certificate number and a certificate of insurance before booking.
What should a drone quote include?
Deliverables with counts or lengths, turnaround time, usage rights, travel, a weather reschedule policy, who secures airspace authorization and the pilot's insurance limit.
How do pilots set their rates?
Work back from annual overhead and the income you need to a day rate, then check it against the market ranges here. The Rate Calculator in the Air Pixels Drone Business Kit does that math.
Method
How these ranges are built.
Low, typical and high figures come from published 2026 rate guides, marketplace listings and pilot rate cards, reconciled per job and checked against the $150–$400 hourly benchmark. Sizes between the published anchor points are interpolated.
An Air Pixels estimate per metro, 0.84 to 1.32, blending regional price levels with local pay for photographers and survey technicians. It scales the whole estimate, add-ons included. Airspace is noted on each city page but not priced.
Sales tax, travel beyond about 50 miles, permits and location fees, airspace waivers, a licensed surveyor’s stamp, spraying and interior scanning. Ask for these as separate lines on a quote.
Ranges are reviewed quarterly and the date at the top changes when they do. These are planning figures, not quotes. Spot a range that is off in your market? Send a correction.
